Maj. Gen. Claude V. Birkhead (1880-1950)
November 1940 - September 1941. Gen. Birkhead left the division to command III Corps area security force. He retired in 1948 and died in 1950.
Maj. Gen. Fred L. Walker
September 1941 - June 1944. Gen. Walker was formerly assistant commander of the 2nd Infantry Division. Gen. Walker left the division in 1944 to assume command of the Infantry School at Fort Benning. He retired in 1946.
Maj. Gen. John E. Dahlquist (1896-1975)
July 1944 - November 1945. [See details under 70th Infantry Division.]
Brig. Gen. Robert I. Stack
November 1945 - Inactivation. Gen. Stack was formerly assistant division commander. Gen. Stack is also remembered for accepting Hermann Goering's surrender in May 1945.
