Maj. Gen. John E. Dahlquist (1896-1975)
June 1943 - July 1944. Gen. Dahlquist served as the first commander of the 70th Infantry Division. He was formerly assistant commander of 76th Infantry Division. Subsequently, Gen. Dahlquist commanded 36th Infantry Division. After the war, Gen. Dahlquist would serve as commander of the 1st Infantry Division, V Corps, and Fourth Army. Gen. Dahlquist died in 1975 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Maj. Gen. Allison J. Barnett
July 1944 - July 1945. Prior to joining the 70th Infantry Division, Gen. Barnett served in the Pacific Theater. Gen. Barnett later served as commander of 94th Infantry Division. Gen. Barnett died in 1971.
Brig. Gen. Thomas W. Herren (1895 - 1985)
July 1945 - Inactivation. Gen. Herren was formerly assistant division commander and commander of Task Force Herren. After WWII, Gen. Herren served in a variety of military roles culminating in command of First Army. Gen. Herren died at the age of 89 in 1985. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
